How do I sell my number plate?

Selling your number plate is very straightforward- as simple as buying or selling a second hand car but for some reason it is a mystical topic on which none too many are sure.

As with anything the hardest bit is finding the buyer – once you have found them, you simply need to negotiate the price and complete the transfer. Read on to find out how.

Can I sell my number plate?

Clearly before you can sell your number plate you need to legally own it- this means either being identified as the grantee or purchaser on the retention document or as owner of the vehicle on which the number plate resides.

Please note that if anywhere on your documentation it clearly states “non transferrable” then that’s it- the number plate can never be separated from the vehicle it is on.

What is my number plate worth?

Good question- and one that may confuse you. Number plates are unique- there is only ever going to be one of each combination and this drives the industry.

As different number plate styles and combinations appeal to different people the safest way to establish the value of your number plate is to approach 2 or three number plate dealers to get some valuations; investigate the values of similar plates on the market and then draw a line in between those figures.

Where can I advertise my number plate?

The number plate market has been led by number plate dealers since it’s inception; number plate dealers are much like estate agents and will advertise your number plate and complete the transaction in return for a percentage commission.

Recently websites such as http://www.smashing-plates.com (the publishers of this information) allow buyers and sellers to interact in a classified environment. If you don’t wish to use a number plate dealer then number plate classifieds are the best alternative for you.

Completing the number plate transfer

Whether your number plate is on retention or on a vehicle you will need to complete the transfer of that number plate to the buyer.
