“Advertise your number plate for free” selling number plates via dealers

“Advertise your number plate for free”

When selling a personal number plate – there seem to be many number plate dealers and companies offering to sell your number plate on your behalf free of charge – is it an offer that’s too good to be true?

“Selling a number plate is like selling a house”

Number plate selling – via dealers – is similar to selling a house and enlisting the services of the estate agent. Both are professional companies and skilled at what they do – both will market and conlude the sale of your house / number plate and both will charge you hand

Why it’s never free

As nice as number plate dealers are - buying and selling number plates is their bread and butter income. As with all things that sound too good to be true this is no exception- but its worth explaining how they charge.

“As a seller you will pay no money to the number plate dealer – but this doesn’t mean free”

As a seller you will pay no money to the number plate dealer when you sell your numberplate – but this doesn’t mean free.

The dealer will add their commission to the asking price of your number plate. On the face of it this is great – much like a no-win no fee solicitor but if someone pays £5000 for your number plate and the dealer passes you £3500 then surely you have paid £1500 for their services?

The true cost

Using the above example – someone has paid £5000 for your number plate but you only received £3500. It makes sense that were you to have found and dealt with this person directly you would be £1500 richer.

“If you dealt directly you would have been £1500 richer”

Different number plate dealers charge differing percentages of commisson. When negotiating the number plate sale it’s worth remembering the number plate dealers’ first priority is a sale and the second priority is getting a good price. It has been known for some dealers – as with estate agents and any kind of broker- to apply pressure to close a sale for the sake of “doing the deal” and earning a commisson- albeit not as sizeable as it could have been.

“There is now a cost effective alternative”

There are two main hurdles for anyone wishing to buy and sell number plates

knowledge of how to transfer number plates

finding the appropriate buyer / seller

Number plate dealers take car of both these areas and on this basis make a living but as with anything- from pay as you go mobile phones to low cost airlines there is now a more cost effective alternative.

Number plate classifieds website give buyers and sellers of number plates the choice and chance to find each other and deal directly- ultimately saving money.

Isn’t transferring number plates difficult?

The DVLA and government have made the DVLA number plate forms extremely straight forward and useful documents. They can still be daunting but they aren’t in the league of filing a tax return(!)

So long as the criteria are met – there is no real mystery or difficulty when transferring number plates – just need to “dot the i’s and cross the t’s”

DVLA number plate hotline – talking telephone numbers

In response to a direct question in Parliament from Paul Rowen – the government confirmed it’s 2007-2008 income from 0870 numbers.

a staggering….

£3,381,649

The DVLA already enjoy massive revenues from the selling number plates, Road fund licence and numerous other areas.

In these times of “credit crunch” and turmoil perhaps the DVLA could pass on savings to motorists -  £4m from telephone calls is an obscene amount of money to have to justify.

There has been a move toward online purchase this year but the DVLA remains largely a telephone based entity.

Flags on number plates

Flags on number platesThe government have finally scrapped the antiquated rules regarding national flags on car number plates.

Despite massive opposition the laws were passed in 2001 banning

the Cross of St George, the Scottish saltire and Welsh dragon along with symbols such as CYM for Cymru or SCO for Scotland

from car number plates - any number plate sporting such images would be against the law and subject to a £60 fine.

“Drivers should have the right to put British flags on their number plate if they want to,”

Theresa Villiers, Tory party spokesperson

Now the 7 year old rules have been abolished many motorists will find themselves within the confines of the law – it’s just a shame the government dithered for so long.

Change is coming – to number plates?

Two big events in one week – first the DVLA sealed bids auction and now the presdiential election – when will things calm down?

So change has finally come to America – here in the office were trying to think of the best OBAMA number plates should he wish to indulge when he visits the UK on his first visit as the most powerful man in the West.

USA 1

CHA6E (CHANGE)

B4RAK (BARACK)

PRE5 (PRESIDENT)

and finally

MCC41N (MCCAIN – just to rub his nose in it!)

It’s a shame that the UK don’t opt for the “vanity” style personalised number plates which are available in the US – as the possibilities are endless!

DVLA registrations – new “buy online” facility

Since the launch of the DVLA select scheme many moons ago, it has been necessary to call the DVLA to complete the purchase of a number plate from them.

….until October of this year!

According to our sources and DVLA documents- the DVLA registrations website (dvlaregistrations.co.uk) will as of October have online purchasing functionality.

This means that not only can you search for your ideal number plate online but you can also purchase onlie too – making it much easier to buy numberplates from the DVLA as well as eliminating the need to call within specified hours.

This will mean that not only can you buy the new F prefix number plates online- but also the soon-to-be-released 58 series- as well as any other prefix or new style number plate available on the DVLA registrations website.

What effect this will have on the trade of DVLA resellers is yet to be seen but as the DVLA invest many millions of pounds to modernise and improve their personalised number plates service- there are surely more innovations to come?

until October…. watch this space!

E prefix number plates | F prefix number plates

With the announcement that the DVLA will finally release  F prefix number plates – it’s worth remembering the launch of E prefix number plates – their release was also witheld for a number of years.

Between the launch of e prefix numberplates and their release via the DVLA website- some great combinations were auctioned off:

E5 HER

£2,300

Sold in Apr 2000

E4 GLE

£4,000

Sold in Mar 1999

E4 MON

£4,500

Sold in Oct 1998

E1 GHT

£16,000

Sold in Dec 1989

Although the E prefix registrations didn’t provide as many great combinations as the F prefix plates promises, it’s worth noting the DVLA’s tactic in witholding desirable combinations to auction them for a greater price.

Those observant few will notice that the DVLA have witheld the new style number plates with 01 as the age identifier.

It would seem the DVLA have realised the potential value of a great deal of their numberplate combinations as they withold ever increasing numbers of plates which will be sold at a future DVLA auction.

DVLA select number plates are steadily increasing in price- some combinations from the DVLA website cost £2599 – the days of bagging a number plate bargain seem to be behind us…

The Number plate market

Number plate market

With hundreds of thousands of number plate transfers and millions of sales annually –James Newell gives insight into the numberplate market and it’s future.

Number plate dealers

There are many hundreds of number plate dealers in the UK- each one advertising number plates from their own stock and on behalf of sellers or the DVLA.(dvla reseller)

Number plate dealers are much like estate agents and transact the buying and selling of number plates as well as completing the necessary paperwork.

Number plate dealers earn their commissions as a percentage of number plates they sell; with the advent of the internet the prospect of buying and selling number plates privately or via number plate classified adverts has increased- number plate dealers may face decline as a result.

Number plate investment

Buying number plates in order to make a profit is a relatively rare and risky proposition- as with any kind of investment careful consideration must be given to the market conditions

Nonetheless if IS possible to make money from number plates- albeit in rarer cases.

Certainly there are some number plates- usually the shorter, older, “dateless” combinations which attract prices in excess of £100,000 but the niche and specific nature of number plates means that unlike property number plates aren’t a safe bet for investment.

Number plate traders

Although it’s not possible to make vast amounts of money from investing solely in number plates- there is always the proposition of buying and selling number plates in the short term- perhaps from buyers and sellers who are unsure of their number plates value.

How many number plates?

It’s impossible to say how many cherished number plates are currently on vehicles in the UK but the DVLA have 20million+ combinations on their DVLA registrations website.

Certainly there seems to be an endless supply of number plates and look-alike number plates- if R1CKY isn’t available there’s always R11CKY, R111CKY and so forth.

The future

The future of the number plate market looks promising- with two new registrations issued each year there is a constant stream of new combinations and opportunities to purchase a funny / highly relevant number plate.

Number plate dealers may face a decline with the advent of number plate classifieds websites and as more and more people buy and sell number plates privately to avoid fees and cutting out the middleman.
