Is my number plate worth anything

Is my number plate worth anything ? - comparative pricing

The quickest and simplest way to establish if your number plate has any value at all is to visit some number plate dealers or number plate classifieds websites.

What to do

Search for your number plate – or at least part of it – and then look at the results.

If you are able to find number plates which are near to the combination you own then you can gauge the value of your plate comparatively.

For example

You own the prefix number plate A2 ABC

Having searched the numberplate dealers you have found the following number plates for sale

A1 ABC £4,500

A22 ABC £800

Quite simply for an example like this you know that A1 ABC will be worth more than A2 ABC (the number one adds value) and likewise A22 ABC will be worth less as it has more digits.

So in this example we could approximately value the plate at £3000.

Where to search

Number plate dealers

Quick and easy- check the dealer’s websites for similar number plates. Remember that the same plate may be advertised for different prices at different dealers….

Number plate classifieds

Private sellers now utilise specialist number plate websites to sell their plates- so it’s a worthy place to continue the search.

DVLA Registrations

The DVLA may have a multitude of unsold combinations for sale from as little as £250. If this is the case then the potential of your plate could be affected.

DVLA Auctions

Some number plates never make it to the dealers or the classifieds and are sold via DVLA auction and never seen again. The DVLA log all sale prices for all lots and make this information available on their website to search – handy!

How to compare – brief guidelines

The brief rules for comparatively pricing your plate are:

Less is more

Less digits generally mean a higher number plate value

Number one’s

A premium is attached to “number 1” number plates

Short and Neat

Short and neat plates (222,333 etc are worth more than less neat plats (323, 342 etc)

Meaning

Regardless of all other factors- your plate is unique. Research the combination and what it could read using Autonumerology – numberplates which spell words or names are worth considerably more.

What is my number plate worth ?

Whether you have purchased a personalised number plate or not you may be surprised to learn that ALL number plates have a value.

Now, some number plates are clearly worth more than others but as a numberplate valuation is based upon the meaning and relevance of a numberplate- it can be an objective and complex topic.

These are the main areas to consider

§ Does it spell a word

§ The meaning of the plate

§ Is it a short / neat combination

§ Does it need modification

§ How much did you pay for it

§ The value of similar plates

Words

First things first- does your plate immediately “read” a word? Do the letters and numbers together make a word- say V3RSE or Y4CHT for example. This is autonumerology- click here to find out how it works.

Meaning

What is the meaning of your plate? If you have obscure letters and numbers together it pays to Google them- a C2 numberplate would appeal to both Citroen and Porsche owners- for example.

Short and Neat

Short and neat combinations- think 11,22,333 or CCC,ABC etc. Short and neat combinations although with no specific meaning- attract buyers as the plates are attractive and neat in themselves.

Modification

Does your plate need modifying to read? Does it use illegal spacing or bolts? If it does then the value will be adversely affected- the DVLA are cracking down heavily on such number plate crime.

What did you pay for it

Clearly if you have bought a number plate for thousands of pounds- you would hope the value would maintain or increase over time. You may be hoping for a big increase if the purchase was a numberplate investment.

Value of similar plates

As with most valuations- market sentiment is key- if similar number plates are fetching a certain value- then this will affect the value of your number plate in the shorter term.

If you’re really not sure what your private plate is worth then its worth applying for a numberplate valuation- let a professional do the legwork for you(!)

DVLA registrations – new “buy online” facility

Since the launch of the DVLA select scheme many moons ago, it has been necessary to call the DVLA to complete the purchase of a number plate from them.

….until October of this year!

According to our sources and DVLA documents- the DVLA registrations website (dvlaregistrations.co.uk) will as of October have online purchasing functionality.

This means that not only can you search for your ideal number plate online but you can also purchase onlie too – making it much easier to buy numberplates from the DVLA as well as eliminating the need to call within specified hours.

This will mean that not only can you buy the new F prefix number plates online- but also the soon-to-be-released 58 series- as well as any other prefix or new style number plate available on the DVLA registrations website.

What effect this will have on the trade of DVLA resellers is yet to be seen but as the DVLA invest many millions of pounds to modernise and improve their personalised number plates service- there are surely more innovations to come?

until October…. watch this space!

asian number plates

Asian number plates are an important part of the world of personalised number plates.

For a long time, cherished number plates and personalised registrations have been sported by many thousands of Asian motorists- as not only a display of wealth and prestige- but also as a display of their faith and religion.

The most famous Asian number plate would be 51NGH - this sold for over £200k at a DVLA auction in 2006.

Singh is a word widely used by sikhs (meaning lion) which forms a surname or middlename.

Next to S1NGH – 51NGH is the last way to spell this word using autonumerology and thus carried a hefty price tag.

S1NGH sold for £86000 in a DVLA auction in 1998 and remains in private hands.

So why are asian number plates so popular?

There are so many combinations of numberplate to be purchased from the DVLA that Asian names and words can be easily spelt and purchased via the DVLA website for modest sums.

With the launch of F number plates – such names as Faisal and Farhad will become easier to obtain.

It would seem that Asian numberplates are here to stay- there is a solid following of Asian motorists- all looking to buy or sell that perfect Asian combination.

BMW number plates

There is a good selection of BMW Number plates at the smashing-plates.com website.

From M3 to X5 to M5 – there are no shortage of prefix numberplate combinations on offer for the BMW owner looking for a personalised number plate.

X3BLC

M3JCS

M5AMA

X5MCM

M5GPR

E6BMW

Bmw number plates with BMW in the text are increasingly carrying a premium- even the DVLA have adjusted the prices of ther “BMW” prefix and new style numberplates accordingly.

Some “BMW” plates on the number plate classifieds website:

PJ03BMW

N30BMW

M3 number plates

Back in 1995 the first few “M3 number plates” began to appear on the roads- M3BMW and M3CSL being the two msot prized combinations as they so succintly display the model and it’s variant.

M5 number plates

M5 number plates soon followed- but to a lesser degree as the number of M3 drivers in the UK far outstrips M5. The best M5 number plate I have ever seen read M5GOA (M5 go-er) – it did make me chuckle!

X5 number plates

the now famous and infamous X5 number plates have really been over done somewhat- aside from X5BMW there really are few if any combinations worth purchasing- and yet nearly every X5 has an X5 plate?

Our advice when buying a BMW number plate? Be More Wary (BMW) haha!

Want to sell your number plate ?

If you want to sell a number plate it can be quite a confusing proposition.

With a myriad of number plate dealers, number plate jargon and DVLA forms you’d be excused for not quite knowing where to start.

To sell your number plate it pays to do your homework first.

You need to establish who will buy your number plate, how much it is worth and where is best to advertise.

illegal number plates – foreign number plates

It seems that as the epidemic of illegal number plates rolls on a new way to break the rules and potentially fox the police and other motorists has appeared.

There are a number of UK registered vehicles on the roads as I’m typing this which do not sport UK number plates – in fact they have foreign, non-reflective number plates made of metal.

The most common format is a German number plate on a German vehicle such as a VW.

The picture below has been doctored to conceal the vehcile’s identity but this is an illegal German number plate on a UK registered vehicle.

It’s worrying that there are some number plate suppliers out there who are willing to manufacture numberplates knowing that they will be used in this fashion.

It seems that in the world of illegal number plates the possibilities and options for those willing to bend the rules are endless.

As the police and the DVLA don’t seem to be doing all in their power to crack down on number plate crime; a group of “vigilante” motorists have established a website for illegal number plate spotters – if they REALLY annoy you- now you can “shop” them!

ELVIS lives! The king lives – and is tracked down by his number plate

So there I was driving along the A40 back to the office when a bright Yellow pontiac appears in front of me at the traffic lights.

ELV 15

I had to check I wasn’t seeing things but managed to snap this photo of the personalised numberplate on my phone as proof!

Surely this is the king himself?

I didn’t get a good look at the driver but judging by the car and the way it was driven- surely this is the KING!

the king lives! – and he likes number plates (!)
